BLY MANOR meets MEXICAN GOTHIC in this haunting romance about a dark family lineage, the ghosts of grief, and the lines we’ll cross for love.
Years ago, Marin’s mother and Alice Lovelace were best friends.
When Marin loses her mother, Alice extends her an offer she can’t turn down – a place to live for the summer, and a fresh start away from her memories. Marin accepts the coveted position as a nanny at Lovelace House, a coastal Maine estate drowning in history and rumours. Marin spends her days chasing two wild children around so that Alice, an acclaimed horror writer, can finish her latest novel.
Then Marin strikes up a friendship with her young wards’ compelling older sister, Evie, who is sent home from boarding school. Marin is asked to tutor Evie so she can graduate on time next year, and the two of them do their best to keep the girls in order. But things are not as they first seem at the mansion. The family dog won’t stop bringing her dead things. The children become more feral every day. At first, Marin dismisses the strangeness of the manor as some facet of her own chronic anxiety – her whole life, Marin has been a worrier, and she sees the worst-case-scenario everywhere she looks. But as Marin slips all too easily from like to love with Evie, she knows there is something wrong with her new home, even if she can’t name it yet.
When their dog kills a bird and it comes back to life in Evie’s hands, Marin must face the truth – all is not well at Lovelace House.
