Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a French author and a pioneer of the science-fiction genre. His novels include Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869-70), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), all available in Penguin Classics.
David Coward is Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Leeds. He is the author of studies of Marcel Pagnol, Marguerite Duras, Marivaux and Restif de la Bretonne, and of a History of French Literature (2002). He has translated numerous French classics, including Molière's plays, Simenon's novels and Albert Cohen's Belle du Seigneur, for which he was awarded the Scott-Moncrieff prize in 1996.

"Jules Verne (* 8. únor 1828, Nantes - † 24. březen 1905, Amiens) byl francouzský spisovatel sci-fi žánru. Jeho knihy jsou dodnes oblíbené hlavně mezi mládeží. Dětství Julese Verna je spojeno s ostrovem Feydau uprostřed Loiry, kde vyrostl, měl kamarády a kde prožíval dobrodružné snové cesty. Strýc Châteaubourg, který byl malířem, tyto chlapecké sny podporoval. Jules ho navštěvoval s mladším bratrem Paulem. Strýc měl alba s vlastními kresbami ze zemí, které poznal a ty malého Julese velmi zajímaly. Roce 1839 v létě se Jules nechal najmout jako plavčík na trojstěžníku Coralia do Indie, jeho rodiče to však zjistili a zabránili mu odejít. Verne vystudoval právo a pak se živil jako obchodník s akciemi. 10. ledna 1857 se oženil s Honorinou Hebe Morelovou, se kterou měl syna Michela. Ten po jeho smrti dopsal rozepsány díla. V roce 1862 se seznámil s nakladatelem Pierrem Julem Hetzelem, který se jako jediný ze všech pařížských vydavatelů rozhodl vydat jeho dílo Pět neděl v balóně. Nabídl mu za něj 10 000 franků, na tehdejší poměry slušnou částku. Román měl obrovský úspěch, proto Hetzel uzavřel s autorem exkluzivní smlouvu na 20 let, v níž se Verne zavázal, že napíše dva romány ročně za honorář 20 000 franků (10 000 franků za jeden). Tato smlouva ho finančně zajistila a umožnila mu živit se pouze psaním. Hetzel byl s Vernem jako autorem spokojený, protože mu zajišťoval nadstandardní příjmy a proto mu honorář postupně zvyšoval. Pětkrát změnil smlouvu, takže si Verne mohl koupit vilu a jachtu. Verne hodně cestoval navštívil severoafrické pobřeží, Baltské moře, USA, Rusko, atd.
